A fuel cell is able to convert a source of power by creating electricity. It requires a fuel source and an oxidant that will create an electrolyte. They are able to continue to operate as long as there is the right balance of ingredients maintained. There are many different combination’s that can be used. The fuel source here is hydrogen and oxygen as the oxidant.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology allows for many variations. Yet all of them then contain three different segments. They are the anode, electrolyte, and cathode. There is a chemical reaction that will occur within these three different segments. That is what will create the electricity – known as the electrical load.

The anode is a catalyst and it will oxidize the hydrogen. The electrolyte allows the ions to pass through it. They are able to create the electric current to the cathode. Once there the ions are rejoined with the electrodes and then to the oxygen. The levels of such exchanges have to be carefully balanced.

Due to the liquid elements of hydrogen fuel cell technology there are concerns with temperature. They can’t be used effectively in temperatures under 32 degrees Fahrenheit or they would freeze. This is one of the biggest barriers to using hydrogen fuel cells successfully in many areas. There is research to try to find ways around this, perhaps changing the types of ingredients used to create the hydrogen fuel.

The other aspect is that the use of hydrogen fuel cell technology is expensive. It costs about $1,000 per kilowatt of electric output. However, there are plenty of studies out there working on ways to reduce the cost. The use of carbon silk may allow for 30% less platinum to be used. However, it won’t compromise the overall performance so that could be one possible solution.

As you can see the hydrogen fuel cell technology is very complex. Yet there are experts out there with the knowledge to use it successfully. They want to see our future include the use of hydrogen power for vehicles. This will be very good due to the fact that it will save money. It also means less dependency on foreign countries for oil. More and more talk has hit the streets about hho fuel. One thing is for certain hydrogen powered cars are becoming increasingly popular through out the world. Some even believe the water powered engine will be the hybrid cars of the future. California is currently leading the race for the infrastructure to hydrogen gas stations. More then 20% of all cars sold in America are bought by Californians. This alone will make a huge impact. Even though the infrastructure isn’t everywhere as of yet does not mean people have to sit back and wait. Hydrogen powered cars are on the horizon, people can begin the transition to hybrid gasoline-hydrogen cars and help rid us of our dependence on fossil fuel engines right now. One very promising technology that could replace gas, and help lower fuel costs, is hydrogen fuel cell technology. What’s that, really? It’s a method of converting water into energy for your car, rather than using costly, polluting gasoline.

So how does it work? Hydrogen may be used in an internal combustion engine configured to run on liquid hydrogen though most of the talk is about using hydrogen in fuel cells to generate electricity. A fuel cell is an electromechanical device which uses hydrogen combined with oxygen to produce electricity. That electricity, in turn, drives the electric motors that propel the car. Fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) are thus electric vehicles.

Fuel cells were a part of the Apollo Mission in 1964, employed to run the on board electronics of the lunar module, yet in the intervening years since they have gained little ground in real world automotive applications. Honda has leased a single FCV to a carefully screened Southern California family. This is the only Honda FCV being driven by any non industry citizen in the country. They refuel at a plant nearby, one of a handful in the country.

The source for hydrogen can be water, the most abundant resource in the world as advocates of this technology will point out. Hydrogen exists nowhere in a pure state, however, and must be isolated from compounds that contain a hydrogen element. This process is energy intensive. Obtaining hydrogen from water requires splitting the molecule apart via electrolysis. This is the second most common method for obtaining hydrogen. Currently the lion’s share (95%) of all hydrogen produced in the U.S. comes from natural gas  through a process called steam methane reforming (SMR).

Why is hydrogen overwhelmingly derived from natural gas, and not water? The answer lies in the cost of procuring hydrogen through energy-intensive electrolysis. Acquisition through electrolysis of water may become more appealing when scarcity and higher costs of natural gas alter the equation. Using electricity generated from renewable sources is possible as advocates suggest, but this is an inefficient use of that electricity when compared with other alternatives.

The logic in using natural gas or other energy sources to create hydrogen when instead those sources could be used directly to power a vehicle seems questionable. Introducing an added step—converting natural gas or electrolyzing water—requires more energy. The energy will come from fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, oil, or other renewable sources. However, technology is constantly advancing, and there may be a day, soon, where you can skip the pump, and power your car from the water hose outside.
